Crown of Thorns, Euphorbia miliiOriginally from Madagascar this semi-succulent got its name in biblical times. Supposedly this plant was used to make the thorny crown for Jesus at the Crucifixion. Red is the most popular but they come in other dazzling colors like hot pink and yellow. Some varieties are lower growing dwarf types and all have thorns. They bloom profusely all year round and are very drought tolerant. They prefer full sun but will do o.k. in partial shade. When pruning, be careful of the milky sap. |
