Spindle Palm, Hyophorbe verschaffeltii

Slow growing palm that gets it common name “Spindle” from the shape of its trunk. The palm slowly forms a gray trunk which becomes thicker in the middle and narrows at both ends to form the shape of a spindle. The base of the shinny, green crown shaft also appears swollen. Develops cream colored male and female flowers on the same tree. Fruit is black and oval shaped, about 1’’ in diameter. Can handle temperatures down to about 30˚ F.
